The training was set up by Daryl Richardson as a way to educate his co-workers about domestic violence. Daryl Richardson has personally felt the effects of domestic violence after his sister was murdered in a domestic violence fatality. Also participating in the event was Yolanda Lee, a long-term advocate and survivor of domestic violence and her daughter, Johnna Lee, who was able to share what it is like to be a child living in a home with domestic violence. FJC Partner Council Spotlight The Deaf Service Bureau (DSB) provides counseling, case management, sign language interpreting, housing, and employment services to survivors as well as other members of the deaf and disabled community. Since its opening in 1996 the DSB has grown to include services for 23 counties throughout West Central Florida. The DSB has been a partner with the Family Justice Center since its opening to help serve the deaf and disabled population.
Recently we provided sign language interpreter services to help a guest complete her intake and receive services from other FJC partner agencies. We were also able to work with Bay Area Legal Services to arrange for this guest to complete her initial interview in person. Jim Hengelbrok at Bay Area Legal Services took the time to research the special needs of deaf and hard of hearing consumers and recognized that this guest may need assistance to complete their pre-interview forms. This is because English is considered a second language for many who use American Sign Language (ASL). We arranged for this guest to arrive early and meet with one of our staff to complete the forms.
Many thanks to the Deaf Service Bureau for being such wonderful advocates! ___________________
