2009 Domestic Violence Task Force Conference  “A Comprehensive Look at Family Violence” with Lundy Bancroft

On October 22nd, 150 attendees had the opportunity to hear Lundy Bancroft talk about the impact of domestic violence on children and how professionals can best support children’s recovery.  The conference brought together professionals from the legal, child welfare, domestic violence advocacy, batterers’ intervention, substance abuse, mental health and other fields to discuss how best to protect and heal children exposed to men who batter women.  Thanks to Laura Rice from Head Start and Rich Rolfes from Rolfes Consulting for being co-chairs of the Domestic Task Force Planning Committee.

Pastor Michael Neely receives the 6th Annual Achievements Against Domestic Violence Award

At the Domestic Violence Task Force Conference on October 22nd, the 6th Annual Achievements Against Domestic Violence Award went to Pastor Michael Neely of the New Millennium Church.  Pastor Mike has volunteered at the Family Justice Center (FJC) since prior to its’ opening.  He assisted with setting up the FJC Chaplaincy Program and has been an active volunteer ever since.  He serves on the FJC Board of Directors, assists with providing “Faith Issues in Domestic Violence” training sessions, trains new volunteer chaplains and supports guests who have been victims of domestic violence with their spirituality.  Congratulations to Pastor Michael Neely on receiving this well-deserved award!

The Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County held a press conference on October 1st to announce the new service offered by the National Family Justice Center Alliance and empowered by the Verizon Foundation .  This free program allows Family Justice Center guests to electronically store important documents on a flash drive or through an online fax filing system.  Speakers at the event included the Alliance President, Casey Gwinn, Sheriff David Gee, State Representative Rich Glorioso, TPD Captain Cherie Adkins, FJC Executive Director, Nikki Daniels and a survivor of Domestic Violence, Lori DeLoreto-Zapata.  The Verizon Foundation also presented the Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County with a donation check for $15,000.

Rod Reder Hands of Peace Award Winner

On October 1st, Family Justice Center Board Chair Rod Reder was honored as the recipient of the Hands of Peace Award.  This is the major award given at the annual Spring of Tampa Bay Breakfast of Peace fundraiser.  Rod was singled out for his commitment and contributions to domestic violence training and prevention as his life work.  Congratulations, Rod!

Domestic Violence Training Offered to Department of Children & Families’ Employees

Dotti Groover from the Family Justice Center was able to offer a special training session for employees at the Department of Children and Families (DCF) on October 13th.  The training was set up by Daryl Richardson as a way to educate his co-workers about domestic violence.  Daryl Richardson has personally felt the effects of domestic violence after his sister was murdered in a domestic violence fatality.  Also participating in the event was Yolanda Lee, a long-term advocate and survivor of domestic violence and her daughter, Johnna Lee, who was able to share what it is like to be a child living in a home with domestic violence.  The training was so well received  and meaningful that a second training was scheduled later in the month at DCF North Tampa Regional Headquarters.

FJC Partner Council Spotlight

The Deaf Service Bureau (DSB) provides counseling, case management, sign language interpreting, housing, and employment services to survivors as well as other members of the deaf and disabled community. Since its opening in 1996 the DSB has grown to include services for 23 counties throughout West Central Florida. The DSB has been a partner with the Family Justice Center since its opening to help serve the deaf and disabled population.

Recently we provided sign language interpreter services to help a guest complete her intake and receive services from other FJC partner agencies. We were also able to work with Bay Area Legal Services to arrange for this guest to complete her initial interview in person. Jim Hengelbrok at Bay Area Legal Services took the time to research the special needs of deaf and hard of hearing consumers and recognized that this guest may need assistance to complete their pre-interview forms. This is because English is considered a second language for many who use American Sign Language (ASL). We arranged for this guest to arrive early and meet with one of our staff to complete the forms.

Many thanks to the Deaf Service Bureau for being such wonderful advocates!
