FJC Partner Council Spotlight

The FJC ‘Partner Spotlight’ for the month of May is Carlos Betancourt of Gulfcoast Legal Services. GCLS provides immigration legal services at no cost to qualifying individuals based on the Federal poverty guidelines. They offer assistance with trying to obtain legal status for DV victims in the following categories:  1.  Removal of Temporary residence (“temporary green card”) and convert to permanent residence (“green card”).  2.  Pursue permanent residence for victims who are married to U.S. citizens or permanent residents under the Violence Against Women Act (can also apply to children and parents of U.S. citizens or permanent residents).  3.  Seek lawful temporary status under the “U” visa for victims of crimes that can later lead to green card.  4.  Representation in deportation court for DV victims. GCLS’s client success story is of a victim of domestic violence from Morocco. Carlos first began working with the FJC guest after she was referred to him through intake. She had her conditional residency but was concerned that she was not going to be able to remain in the US if she left her abusive husband who was a US citizen. Her husband had threatened to have her sent back to the Morocco and keep their child in the states with him if they divorced. With the help of Gulf Coast Legal Services, Bay Area Legal Services, and the FJC the guest was able to obtain her permanent residency, divorce her husband, and obtain full custody of her child. Thank you, Gulf Coast Legal Services for all the work that you do!

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections:
Adopt A Precinct Program

The Adopt A Precinct Program is a way for the Supervisor of Elections to recruit poll workers;
for community service organizations, PTSAs, clubs and nonprofits to raise funds; and for voters in our
county to receive excellent Election Day services. If you are interested in volunteering for and making a donation to the Family Justice Center this is a perfect fit for you! The Supervisor of Elections will train you as a poll worker and assign you to a polling site. You will ’volunteer’ the required hours at the poll for the day; or in special circumstances, a half day. After the election, the FJC will receive a check from the Supervisor of Elections in the amount equal to what you would have earned for working at the polls. You’ll be able to meet lots of great people and be able to help the FJC at the same time! For more information, or to become involved, please contact:

Education and Outreach Coordinator, Mona Cruz at outreachcoord@fjchc.org or
813-490-9428.

4:30pm - 8:30pm
FJC

“A Gift of Presence” is an Interfaith Chaplaincy Program training for
clergy and lay people on the complex issues of providing spiritual support to victims of domestic violence. This training addresses the key faith issues a domestic violence victim may be facing and teaches clergy how to offer support
that focuses on safety and is victim-centered. This training also addresses the issue of providing the Gift of Presence in a non-sectarian, non-proselytizing fashion.
This class trains clergy to serve as Chaplains in the FJC Interfaith Chaplaincy Program, although anyone is welcome to attend.
