FJC Partner Council Spotlight Hispanic Services Council was created in 1991 by a small but concerned group of local professionals as Hispanic Needs and Services. Now known as Hispanic Services Council (HSC), the organization is primarily concerned with the issues of local Hispanic residents and the limitations they face in accessing services due to language barriers. The Council’s primary goals are to coordinate services and resources, promote appreciation of the Hispanic culture, promote leadership, and provide advocacy for those individuals during their successful integration, assimilation, and acculturation into a new culture.
Since its inception, HSC has grown and presently has three funded offices that provide a unique delivery of services that impact the entire family and community. As a result, HSC is able to encourage and promote self sufficiency, foster empowerment, and provide advocacy and education.
HSC partners and collaborates with other community agencies to enhance and ensure that quality of service is provided to Hispanics and the community as a whole.
At present time, HSC provides the following services but not limited to: Information and Referral STEP Parenting Classes (Court approved) Family Support Case Facilitation ESOL / Citizenship Classes
One example of the wonderful impact HSC has had is the family of Mr. Leon. As a father of a 1 year old who was also the head of a household that included his fiancé and his mother, it was devastating when Mr. Leon lost his job due to loss of his driving privileges. Mr. Leon contacted HSC and explained that his mother, who was earning minimum wage, was left as the sole provider for the entire family. HSC conducted a home visit to identify and prioritize needs and assisted the family in developing a case plan that built on individual and family strengths.
HSC also provided assistance with immediate needs and linked Mr. Leon with community agencies and private entities that assisted with household financial situation and legal issues. As a result, Mr. Leon driving privileges were restored and financial stability was obtained as he was able to return to previous employment. Mr. Leon is now employed and attending school.
HSC has three offices located in Tampa, Plant City, and Apollo Beach. HSC also co-locates at different agencies throughout Hillsborough County. For more information on Hispanic Services Council, call the main office at (813) 936-7700 or go to the website at www.hispanicservicescouncil.org.

Volunteer Spotlight This month we would like to say a big thank you to one of our volunteers, Anam Afridi. Anam has been volunteering at the Family Justice Center since July 2009 and has volunteered more than 200 hours. Anam is a recent graduate of Queen Mary, University of London, earning a degree in Material Engineering. However, Anam finds herself being called to help women and children from all over the world and has a special interest in helping victims of domestic violence. Anam herself has personal experience in being in a relationship with domestic violence and wants to be there for other survivors, as she can identify with what they are feeling. Anam is interested in pursuing a Master’s Degree in either Social Work or Criminal Justice and is looking forward to providing more direct services to guests at the FJC. Thank you Anam for all your hard work and dedication to FJC and survivors of domestic violence! __________________
